Swine Research Technician
The HORD team is nationally known for our world class swine production and is currently looking for an individual to add to our swine research team. This position offers full training, and encompasses all aspects of animal care. No prior swine or research experience is needed, but is preferred. The research farms are semi-climate-controlled environments.
This key position will have the responsibility of assisting the research team in the execution of swine research for the HORD companies. Responsibilities include monitoring and providing the daily care, health, and maintenance of animals and research facilities to ensure optimum animal productivity and research success. This position also assists with routine research data management and collection, working with animals including actions such as weighing, tagging, observational scoring, etc.
The ideal candidate will have the desire to work with pigs, a willingness to learn, excellent organizational skills, a high level of dependability as evidenced with a solid work history, and a proven record of drive for excellence.
Provide daily care and management of animals to ensure that:
Animals are properly fed
Water is available
Sick animals are treated properly and timely
Animal conditions are evaluated, maintained, and recorded in accordance with record-keeping procedures
Accurate, detailed record keeping occurs
Assists in the care and management of facilities to ensure that:
Fans, curtains, heaters, and other equipment are working properly
Ventilation equipment is adjusted to provide the proper environment
Facilities are kept clean, including power washing and disinfecting
Assists research team with data management and collection
Examples include: pig weighing, tagging, observational scoring, etc.
Must be able to frequently work alone or with limited supervision and immediately report all issues and problems to management
Performs other duties and responsibilities as defined by management and according to SOP standards
Associates degree in animal science/production or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred, but not required
1-2 years of previous livestock handling and experience in a research environment preferred, but not required
Must not currently own or have routine contact with swine
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
Display a high level of respect to team members and animals
Willingness to learn and carry out complex instructions effectively
Impeccable record of reliability/dependability
Desire and ability to work in a physically strenuous environment with frequent walking, bending, reaching and lifting up to approx. 50 lbs.
Analytical skills and experience with organizing and recording data
